School Street exemptions

Only exempted vehicles can enter School Street zones during operational times. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible to apply for an exemption.

Eligible to apply for an exemption

Residents or businesses in a School Street zone

If you are a resident or employee of a business within a School Street zone who had an on-street Islington parking permit for your vehicle prior to the zone going live, you do not need to apply for an exemption. Your vehicle's registration will automatically be added to our list of exempted vehicles. This is an electronic permit so you will not receive anything in the post.

You do need to apply if you:

  • obtained a parking permit after the SchoolStreet went live
  • have changed your vehicle
  • do not have a parking permit
  • have recently moved into the School Street zone and your new address is one of the exempted addresses

Residents of housing estate accessed through a School Street zone

If you're a resident of a housing estate and must enter the school street zone to access your parking bay (rather than taking an alternate route), you can apply for an exemption.

Blue badge holders who need access

If you're a Blue Badge holder who is not a resident within the zone, and you need access to a property on the School Street, you can apply for an exemption. Blue Badge holders may not use the road as a through-route during the School Street operating hours.

If you or your child are a Blue Badge holder and need access to the school, you are eligible to apply for an exemption.

Not eligible to apply

Vehicles that are not permitted to enter the School Street zone during operational hours, and cannot apply for an exemption include:

  • trades vehicles
  • delivery vehicles
  • contractors
  • school staff
  • visitors
  • parents and carers dropping off children

This is not a complete list. There may be other vehicles and people who are not eligible to apply.

How to apply

If you are eligible, you can apply for an exemption online. You will be asked to upload the following evidence:

  • Resident: proof of residency dated within three months such as a council tax bill or utility bill
  • Employee of a business: email or letter on company headed paper from your manager to confirm your employment
  • Blue Badge holder needing access: copy of your Blue Badge, and proof of your need for access. For example, a letter or email from your doctor confirming you are a patient at a hospital in the School Street zone
  • Blue Badge holder needing access to school: copy of Blue Badge and official letter or email from the headteacher confirming child's attendance
  • Resident on estate with estate parking: proof of residency dated within three months such as a council tax bill

In addition, you will need to supply your vehicle logbook (V5C).
