Pay for short stay parking

Pay for short stay parking using your mobile phone or PayPoint shop.

There are almost 6,500 short stay parking bays in Islington that you can use and pay to park with your phone.

Anyone can pay to park in these bays using the RingGo app or Paypoint shops. Find out where they are on the interactive map - zoom into an area on the map and you can then switch on the 'parking bays' option to see the bays.

Blue Badge holders can park in short stay parking bays for an unlimited time.

Pay for parking by phone

You can pay by phone at every short-stay parking bay in Islington including Sobell Leisure Centre and Sonderburg car parks. Before paying for short-stay parking, read our terms and conditions page.

Cost

Parking in a short stay bay will cost between £4.10 and £7.05 for all vehicles. Use RingGo to check prices.

The whole cost of your parking stay depends on the type of fuel your vehicle uses, the emissions of your vehicle as well as where and what time you are parking.

Peak time surcharge

All short-stay parking between 10am and 1pm, Monday to Friday includes a maximum £1 surcharge. This is to reduce congestion during busy periods and encourage more sustainable travel.

Because of limited daytime restrictions, the surcharge does not apply to controlled parking zones:

  • G
  • HE
  • TW
  • U
  • Z

Fuel surcharge on short-stay parking

Petrol, hybrid and diesel vehicles must pay a surcharge on top of the standard short-stay parking price. The cost depends on the emissions from your vehicle. This is part of our net zero carbon aims.

Fuel surcharge cost

Fuel type and vehicle emissions Surcharge per hour (on top of parking price)
Petrol and hybrid - 1-185g/km CO2 £2.20
Petrol and hybrid - 186-225g/km CO2 £2.75
Petrol and hybrid - Over 226g/km CO2 £4.10
Diesel £7.20

Electric vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) pay standard short-stay parking bay prices. There is no fuel surcharge for EVs. Hybrid vehicles must pay a fuel surcharge.

Restrictions and changes to pricing

End of flat evening rate in zone C on 18 November 2024

On 18 November 2024, we replaced the flat evening rate in controlled parking zone C with the standard tariff of £6.90 per hour plus fuel surcharge.

Suspension of parking bays

Short stay bays may be suspended for highways works, special events or other reasons. You must check the signs each time you park. Any vehicle parked in a suspended bay could get a parking ticket and may also be removed.

Parking during match day controls

Parking in a bay with additional match day controls costs £13.60 per hour, plus the fuel surcharge.

If you are a visitor to someone who lives in Islington, you can't use paper visitor vouchers during match day controls.

Instead, use visitor e-vouchers. These cost:

  • £4.35 per hour, plus any fuel surcharge.
  • discounted visitor e-vouchers for residents: £2.15 per hour plus any fuel surcharge.

Find out more about Emirates Stadium match day controls.

Motorcycle parking

Parking in dedicated motorcycle bays without a permit costs:

  • petrol motorcycles: £1.09 per day
  • electric motorcycles: £0.54 per day

Paying for parking is the same as short-stay parking spaces for other vehicles. Look for signs that show the pay by phone provider’s number and location code of the bay.

Residents

Residents with a valid motorcycle permit do not need to pay the daily price and can park in any motorcycle bay.

Non-residents

Non-residents can register for a non-resident motorcycle permit with RingGo. You can use this permit for any motorcycle bay.
