From murals to sculptures, these creative works add character to our neighbourhoods and make them even more enjoyable places to live, work and visit. Public art can be permanent or temporary and can even include performances.
We want public spaces to be more visually interesting and public art can foster a sense of community and celebrate Islington's unique character. Public art should reflect the diversity of our people and our rich history. When public art is being developed, our residents should be involved in advising on what art they might want and maybe have the opportunity to participate in creating it.
Islington public art policy
We have created new guidance on public art that expands on Policy DH8: Public Art in the Local Plan. The guidance supports the Islington Together 2030 plan to work together with our diverse communities, partners, community, and local organisations to create a more equal future for our borough by 2030.
This public art guidance:
- is designed for anyone interested in bringing public art to Islington
- clarifies what we consider public art
- outlines what we think it can do for our communities
- provides recommendations on how to develop and create inclusive art
- explains how art can contribute to safer, more connected communities, enhance local environments and heritage and make our neighbourhoods even more attractive places to live.
How the Culture Team can help
Our Culture Team is your partner in creating amazing public art. They work alongside artists and residents to:
- Champion great art - guiding the commissioning process, making sure new pieces resonate with communities.
- Bring art to life safely - advising on safe installation and how to create clear project briefs, make sure public art has the conditions to thrive.
- Shape the future of art - spearheading major public art projects and support with planning agreements (section 106).
- Help find the best talent - providing expertise on partner-led selection panels to find the best artists.
- Care for our art - working with commissioners and partners to maintain existing artworks and decommission artworks that have reached the end of their lifespan.
